Understanding the different eSIM plans (Set vs. Unlimited)
How eSIM Plans Work – Simple Guide
Buying an eSIM plan might sound confusing, but it’s actually very easy. Let’s break it down in simple steps.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is like a SIM card that lives inside your phone. You don’t need to put in a plastic card. Instead, you just scan a QR code or follow a link, and your phone connects to the network.
Two main types of plans
There are two main ways eSIM plans are sold. Let’s look at them:
1. Set Data Plans
These are simple. You get a fixed amount of data to use over a set number of days. For example:
- 20GB / 30 Days – This means you can use up to 20GB of data, and it will last for 30 days from when you first land/arrive at your destination.
Once you use up all the data or when the days are finished, the plan stops. You can then buy another plan or top up manually if you need more time or data.
2. Unlimited Plans with Daily Caps
These plans give you “unlimited” data, but to keep the network fair, there’s a daily cap (limit enforced by local country's infrastructure). Here’s how it works:
- 500MB per day – You get 500MB of high-speed data each day.
- 1GB per day – You get 1GB of high-speed data each day.
- 1.5GB per day – You get 1.5GB of high-speed data each day.
- 2GB per day – You get 2GB of high-speed data each day.
If you use up your daily cap, your internet will still work, but the speed becomes slower until midnight (local time). At midnight, your full daily amount resets, and you get fast speed again.
Why people like eSIMs
- No waiting for postage – it’s all online.
- No plastic card to lose.
- Quick setup – scan, tap, and go.
Helpful tips
- It’s best to install your eSIM a day or two before flying. You’ll need Wi-Fi for the first setup. (💡 Note: Apple iOS device may give misleading errors when outside of the destination)
- When you land or arrive at the destination, simply turn ON the eSIM and make sure roaming is enabled/ON for the eSIM in your phone settings.
eSIMs make staying connected simple, even if you’re not very tech-savvy. Once it’s set up, your phone works just like normal, only with a travel plan that saves you money.
