Top Mobile Hotspot Tips to Save Power and Data for eSIM Users

Using a data-only eSIM from AirSims is a smart way to stay connected while traveling. But whether you're hot spotting from your phone or tablet, it's easy to burn through data and battery if you're not careful. Here are 9 essential tips to help you get the most out of your eSIM while saving power and data on the go.

1. Limit Connected Devices
Only connect the devices you need. Each additional device increases data usage and drains your phone’s battery faster.

2. Use Low Data Mode
Enable “Low Data Mode” on iOS or “Data Saver” on Android. This reduces background activity like app refreshes and automatic downloads.

3. Turn Off Auto-Updates
Pause automatic updates for apps and operating systems (on your PC or Mac) while using your hotspot. These can consume hundreds of megabytes without warning.

4. Lower Streaming Quality
Streaming video? Drop the resolution to 480p or lower. It’s perfectly watchable on mobile screens and saves a ton of data.

5. Keep Your Phone Cool
Hot spotting can heat up your phone. Keep it out of direct sunlight and avoid using it while charging to prevent overheating and battery drain. 💡Bonus tip: Keeping the battery cool also extends the phone's service life.

6. Enable Power Saving Mode
Use your phone’s built-in battery saver to extend uptime. It limits background processes and dims the screen - perfect for long travel days.

7. Monitor Your Data Usage
Track your data usage in real time using your phone’s settings or the AirSims dashboard (via a personal link in your QR code email). Set alerts (feature on many newer smartphones) to avoid running out unexpectedly.

8. Download Before You Go
Download maps, playlists, and documents while on Wi-Fi. Offline access means less data used when you're out and about.

9. Turn Off Hotspot When Idle
If you’re not actively using your hotspot, turn it off. It saves both battery and data, especially when you're in transit or between tasks.

10. Bring a fully charged power bank
Hotspot function uses extra battery power, you may find yourself inadvertently running out of battery power quicker than anticipated. A small power bank should be enough to get you out of trouble. While a large power bank can be tempting - it does make things cumbersome and you also have to factor in fire risk (harder to extinguish). We usually recommend 2 smaller power banks, as this also helps reduce the chance of having the having a single point of failure - this means if one power bank fails you will still have another to use.
