eSIM Jargon Buster: The Traveller's Glossary
Travelling with an eSIM is simple — but the tech world loves its acronyms. Here's a plain-English breakdown of every term you're likely to encounter, from data units to connectivity standards and hardware specs.
📦 GB — Gigabyte
The main unit used to measure your eSIM data allowance. 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Most travellers use 1–3 GB per week for maps, messaging, and social media — heavy streamers may need more.
🔹 MB — Megabyte
A smaller unit of data — 1,000 MB makes up 1 GB. You'll see MB used for smaller plan add-ons or when checking real-time data usage on your phone's settings screen.
⚠️ FUP — Fair Use Policy
A speed throttle applied after you hit a defined data threshold on unlimited plans. You can still browse, but speeds drop (often to 1–3 Mbps) until your daily or monthly cycle resets.
📶 3G — Third Generation
An older mobile network standard capable of basic internet browsing, email, and messaging. Speeds typically range from 1–10 Mbps — fine for texts and maps, but slow for video or large downloads.

🌐 Roaming
Using your home carrier's service on a foreign network — traditionally very expensive. eSIMs eliminate roaming fees by connecting you directly to a local network in your destination country.
📡 Wi-Fi
Wireless internet delivered via a local router, typically found in hotels, cafés, and airports. Convenient but often unsecured — your eSIM data is a safer, always-on alternative when you're on the move.

📍 Breakout Points
The physical locations (data centres or network nodes) where your mobile data traffic exits onto the internet. Breakout point location can affect speed, latency, and which regional content you can access.
🔐 eUICC — Embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card
The chip inside your device that makes eSIM possible. It can store multiple carrier profiles simultaneously and switch between them without needing a physical SIM swap — the core technology behind every AirSims plan.
🪪 ICCID — Integrated Circuit Card Identifier
A unique 19–20 digit number that identifies your eSIM profile — similar to a serial number. You may be asked for your ICCID when contacting support or troubleshooting a connectivity issue.
📱 Cellular
The mobile network infrastructure (towers, antennas, base stations) that your eSIM connects to. "Cellular data" simply means internet access delivered over this network rather than via Wi-Fi.
🔑 APN — Access Point Name
A gateway setting that tells your phone how to connect to the carrier's mobile data network. Most AirSims eSIMs configure this automatically — but manual APN settings may occasionally be needed on some devices.
🛡️ VPN — Virtual Private Network

🆔 EID — eSIM Identifier

💳 pSIM — Physical SIM

📳 Dual SIM

🗂️ eSIM Profile

🔒 PUK — PIN Unlock Key

🚫 Spam / Junk Mail
Unsolicited or bulk email automatically filtered by your mail app. Check your spam folder if you haven't received your AirSims QR code — activation emails occasionally get caught by overzealous filters.
🔗 HTTP / HTTPS
Protocols that govern how data is transferred between your browser and websites. HTTPS (the "S" stands for Secure) encrypts the connection — always look for HTTPS when entering personal or payment details online.
📷 QR Code
A scannable square barcode used to install your eSIM profile. After purchasing an AirSims plan, you'll receive a QR code by email — simply scan it in your phone's Settings to download and activate your plan instantly.
🏢 MDM — Mobile Device Management
Software used by businesses and schools to remotely manage and restrict devices. MDM can block eSIM installation — if you're using a work or school device and can't install your eSIM, check with your IT administrator.
🔐 Authentication App
An app (like Google Authenticator or Authy) that generates time-sensitive one-time codes for two-factor login security. More secure than SMS-based codes — recommended for protecting your AirSims account and email.
📞 SMS & Regular Calls
Traditional text messages and voice calls routed over your carrier's cellular voice network. AirSims eSIMs are data-only plans — for SMS and calls abroad, keep your home SIM active in a Dual SIM setup or use a web-based alternative.
💬 Web-Based Messaging & Calling

✈️ Airplane Mode
A device setting that disables all wireless radios — cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Useful during flights, but remember to re-enable Wi-Fi or cellular data after landing to reconnect your eSIM to the local network.
